The first of a four-book series about the criminality under-pinning many areas of society across South East Asia, especially the exploitation behind the facade of many of the tourist paradises. The books tell the story of members of the Hmong people of Laos in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. The Hmong, an indigenous ethnic group from East and South-East Asia, have often been subject to persecution. The books are an exposé of the main aspects of criminality often seen in the region in relation to the trafficking of people, prostitution, guns, drugs and consumer and industrial products of all types. Often, just to survive, with many opportunities provided to others in society not afforded to the Hmong, in the face of crushing poverty, many members of the tribe found themselves drawn into illegal activity that underpinned much of society in the region.
